Things to see and do in PendleEnglish Heritage and The National TrustSawley Abbey - English Heritage The remains of a Cistercian abbey which was founded in 1148, located on the banks of the Ribble against the stunning backdrop of Pendle hills. After being dissolved in 1536, the monks briefly came back to the abbey during the Pilgrimage of Grace, and stayed in possession until the insurrection’s final collapse and the execution of their abbot. Located at Sawley; 3.5 miles North of Clitheroe, off A59.
Pendle Heritage Centre - English Heritage
The centre features an 18th century
restored walled garden and various exhibitions about the area.
Goodshaw Chapel - English Heritage English Heritage’s only traditional Nonconformist place
of worship, this very atmospheric Baptist chapel has a complete
set of box-pews, upper galleries and a superb pulpit dating from
between 1740 and 1800.
An annual festival of hymns is held on the first Sunday in
July.
Padiham - Gawthorpe Hall - National Trust & Lancashire County CouncilAn
Elizabethan house with rich interiors and an important textile
collection
- indeed, a gem in the heart of industrial
Lancashire. The unique collection of textiles and costume from all over the
world
mingles with paintings on loan from the National Portrait Gallery
to produce an amazing atmosphere. There are extensive grounds and woodland
walks, and the whole property has very close links to the 17th-century
trial and ordeals of the Pendle
Witches. There's also the Great Barn, an unusual threshing barn
with an amazing cathedral-like feel to it.
Gawthorpe Hall has
a tea-room and a National Trust shop. Opening times vary, so
please check before visiting.
